BMW Hydrogen 7
From the driver seat, this is definitely still a BMW. The H-7 is smooth, polished, poised on the road, and still pretty spritely.
With all the comforts and amenities of a non-hydrogen BMW 7 Series, the BMW Hydrogen 7 is powered by a 260 hp twelve-cylinder engine and accelerates from 0-62.1 mph in 9.5 seconds. Top speed is limited electronically to 143 mph. The BMW Hydrogen 7 also features a dual-mode power unit - controlled at the touch of a button - that can switch quickly and conveniently from hydrogen to conventional premium gasoline.
Passing maneuvers and uphill on-ramps need a little more careful consideration than in a 760 because you don't have as much sheer thrust.
Anyone getting an H-7 to drive will find a vehicle that artfully disguises its progressive technology. Starting with the long-wheelbase chassis of the 760Li, BMW engineers pushed the rear seat forward and pulled the trunk's bulkhead back to make room for the hydrogen storage tank.
The car has been road tested over more than 1 million km in Africa, throughout the Nordic countries and in heavy city traffic.
Hydrogen will "boil off" after time, particularly when stored in lower volumes - meaning some fuel loss. BMW has established that boil off of H2 in its car is minimal and does not start until 17 hours after the tank has been filled. There are management systems in place for this process.
