The 2007 Lexus RX 400h is a midsize SUV with a gasoline/electric powertrain.
The RX 400h's appearance differs only modestly from the regular RX 330. Styling revisions include round fog lamps and an additional opening on the front bumper fascia for cooling powertrain components. The RX 400h is an inch longer than the RX 330 and weighs 300 pounds more.
Hybrids might be known for fuel-saving capabilities, but performance reigns supreme in the RX 400h. This SUV zooms confidently and effortlessly from a standstill to highway speed, and it's difficult to discern exactly when the gasoline engine comes into play.Technology
The RX 400h is powered by a new version of the Hybrid Synergy Drive system that pairs the 3.3-liter V6 that normally powers the RX 330 with an electric motor. Lexus describes the RX 400h hybrid system as a breakthrough in hybrid technology that not only improves the fuel efficiency, but also improves the performance.
The engine makes a maximum of 208 horsepower at 5600 rpm, with 212 lb-ft of torque at 4400 rpm. The front motor makes 167 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 247 lb-ft of torque from zero to 1500 rpm - just the ticket for fast acceleration when needed. They are coupled through a planetary gear continuously-variable transmission, which is controlled by computers and motor-generator 1, which is also the starter motor. A second motor, with 68 hp from 4610 through 5120 rpm and 96 lb-ft of torque from zero to 610 rpm, runs the rear wheels when the control computer decides extra rear traction is needed.
The RX 400h interior incorporates brushed aluminum trim for a more high-tech look to reflect the high-tech nature of the vehicle.
As outside, interior differences between the gasoline and hybrid versions of the RX are minimal, especially with the standard equipment realignments. The battery pack is located under the rear seat, and all that can be seen are vents in the solid underseat area.
A computer monitor for the hybrid system is located in the center of the instrument panel.
The base 400h comes with cloth seats, 10-way power driver and front passenger seats with power lumbar support, dual-zone climate control, second row seats that slide and recline, an eight-speaker, six-disc CD player and 17-inch wheels. Options include leather seats, a roof rack with rails, a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, moonroof, HID headlamps that swivel when you turn and 18-inch wheels.
